Successful Franchises: What Size?

Choosing the size of the franchise operation you wish to undertake is equally important to choosing the type of franchise you want to operate. You select the type of franchise you want to open based on your personality, business goals, and the needs of the area in which you live or plan to relocate. Choosing the size of the franchise you want to operate also depends largely upon these factors.

It is first important to consider the area in which you live and the opportunity for growth available in that area. If you live in a town with several discount stores already present, you may want to weigh the risk of opening up a Dollar Store franchise. However, if you live in an area that only has one or two workout clubs or quick service oil change centers, perhaps opening up a Fitness Center or Precision Tune Auto Care franchise would be a profitable enterprise for you.

The second important consideration you will have to investigate is how well you are able to manage a large or small franchise venture. If you feel that you lack large-scale management experience, it may be a better idea to open up a smaller franchise store than to invest in a large-scale venture. Perhaps you are more comfortable in the more intimate albeit fast-paced atmosphere of a smaller sized franchise store like Dunkin Donuts or Wendy's. You can even open a franchised gas station such as 7-Eleven. There are endless opportunities to open a franchise in just about every type of business venture imaginable. Also, just because the actual store location is smaller, such as in a fast food restaurant or gas station, does not mean that the franchise opportunities are small or will be unprofitable. Depending upon your area rights, you may have the opportunity to run a successful string of franchise locations while still presiding over smaller stores.

If you enjoy the challenging opportunity of managing a large group of employees in a bigger company, operating a larger-scale store is the better track for you, because you may find it more interesting and challenging to your business management skills. Whatever size franchise you choose, it is important to investigate where you plan to open it in order to ensure your business has a good chance of being successful.
