| Successful Franchises: The Franchisors
You have chosen your specific type of franchise based upon the type of business you feel most interested in and comfortable running. You may have even selected the type of franchise to run based upon its brand name and whether or not you have been a previous employee and have a vested interest in the company. Even if you chose the type of franchise to open based purely on how profitable you thought it would be, it is of key importance to develop a good, working relationship and understanding of the franchisor you are essentially working for.
Even though you are your own boss, you are technically accountable to the franchisor of your business. The franchisor has granted you permission and rights to establish the franchise in certain locations and has given you the right to distribute and sell their product. It is a good idea to find out as much information about the franchisor as possible. You should view their Uniform Franchise Offering Circular, which is a document about the company that is drawn up in accordance to the rules and regulations of the Federal Trade Commission, or FTC. This document is an invaluable piece of information. It includes the current franchise agreement, information on the company’s principals, and audited financial information. It is a wise idea, in fact, to investigate this document before opening your franchise.
Word of mouth and general research are also great ways to investigate your parent company. Speak with other franchisees and employees of the company to determine both the positives and negatives of running a franchise for the company. Do not be thrown off course if one person seems negative. This does not mean that you could not make the business model successful for yourself. You may have different qualifications or skills, or your location could make the difference in whether your company will be successful. Once you have become knowledgeable about your parent company, it is a good idea to maintain clear and open communication, because this will help your own franchise to grow. After all, the franchisor is ultimately responsible for the success of the type of business you own as a whole.
