| Franchising: An Overview
The world of franchising is growing exponentially every day in the United States. Most people do not realize that many of the businesses they patronize every day are part of a nationwide system of franchises. For example, in the morning you might pick up your daily coffee at a local Starbucks. For lunch, you may devour a sandwich or salad from Subway. On the way home from work, you drop off your movie rentals at the nearby Blockbuster. And for dinner, you pick up a hot pizza from Pizza Hut.
All of these businesses are part of a franchise system. In fact, you may have even noticed that. Besides the prevalence of franchise stores—there seems literally to be one on every corner—you may have noticed signs advertising for franchise opportunities within the stores. For example, Subway sometimes has franchise opportunity brochures available to the public, while other stores advertise and promote the benefits of opening up and maintaining your own franchise business.
While franchising is certainly not the answer for everyone’s business desires, more and more people seem to be jumping on the franchising bandwagon. Established business employees who are tired of working in an office find more opportunity in opening up their own restaurant or coffee franchise. Women and minorities are enjoying the freedom of the franchise industry. Even graduates fresh out of college can find their niche in the growing world of franchising.
However, as with any business venture, there are important considerations to be noted when investigating franchising opportunities. There are several things the would-be business owner needs to decide, from what type of franchise he would like to open to how well he can cooperate with the higher-ups within the franchise system. Some people crave the freedom of being their own boss without any strings, in which case opening up a venture entirely their own would be the best bet. However, other people thrive with a successful franchise, happy to be the boss of their store and to receive guidance from the franchise higher-ups. Either way, franchising could be a wonderful business opportunity and is worth investigating. |
